7 Most Common Automatic Gate Problems (And How to Fix Them)

Gate not closing? Remote stopped working? Motor running but gate not moving? We walk through the seven faults our engineers see most — and what to do.

1. Remote Control Range Has Reduced

  • *Likely cause:** Battery in the remote is low, or the receiver antenna is damaged.
  • *Fix:** Replace the remote battery first. If range doesn't improve, check the antenna wire on the control board is intact and fully extended.

2. Gate Opens But Won't Close

  • *Likely cause:** Safety sensor (photo-electric beam) is misaligned, dirty, or faulty.
  • *Fix:** Clean both sensor heads with a dry cloth. Realign them so the beam is unobstructed. Most boards have an indicator LED that confirms beam status.

3. Motor Runs But Gate Doesn't Move

  • *Likely cause:** The drive mechanism is disengaged (manual release mode) or the rack/chain is broken.
  • *Fix:** Check that the manual release handle or key has been returned to "auto" position. Inspect the rack for broken teeth.

4. Gate Reverses Immediately After Starting

  • *Likely cause:** Obstruction sensor triggered, or motor torque limit set too low.
  • *Fix:** Remove any obstruction. If clear, increase the force/sensitivity setting on the control board (refer to your manual).

5. Gate Moves Slowly or Stops Mid-Cycle

  • *Likely cause:** Low battery backup voltage, or motor overheating after many rapid cycles.
  • *Fix:** Test the battery voltage with a multimeter — should be 13.5V+ (12V system). Allow motor to cool before further operation.

6. Intercom Works But Gate Doesn't Open

  • *Likely cause:** Relay contact between intercom and gate board has failed.
  • *Fix:** Test the relay output with a multimeter. Most intercoms have a dry-contact output — check wiring continuity to the gate board's trigger input.

7. Gate Vibrates or Makes Grinding Noise

  • *Likely cause:** Worn rollers, loose mounting bolts, or lack of lubrication.
  • *Fix:** Lubricate all moving parts. Tighten all visible bolts. Inspect rollers for flat spots and replace if needed.
